Drowning Is Silent
Drowning doesn't look like movies portray. Victims can't call for help or wave - they're focused on trying to breathe.
๐จ Real Signs of Drowning
- Head low in water, mouth at water level
- Head tilted back, mouth open
- Eyes glassy, unfocused, or closed
- Vertical in water, not using legs
- Trying to swim but not moving
- Silent - no splashing or yelling
Drowning can happen in 20-60 seconds. Active supervision means eyes on the water at all times.
Pool & Backyard Water Safety
๐ง Pool Safety Rules
- Never swim alone - always use buddy system
- Fence pools with self-closing, self-latching gates
- Remove toys from pool when not in use
- Keep rescue equipment nearby (life ring, reaching pole)
- Learn CPR - seconds matter
- No diving in shallow water
- Designate a "water watcher" at parties
๐ง Kids Around Water
- Arm's reach supervision for young children
- Swim lessons reduce drowning risk
- Life jackets for weak swimmers (not water wings)
- Empty kiddie pools after use
- Buckets and bathtubs are hazards too
Ice Safety
Ice thickness is unpredictable. Stay off unless ice is tested and at least 4 inches thick for walking.
๐ง If Someone Falls Through Ice
- Don't go out on the ice - you'll likely fall in too
- Call 911 immediately
- Reach with a pole, ladder, rope, or branch
- Throw a rope, life ring, or anything that floats
- If victim gets out, have them roll away from hole (spreads weight)
๐จ If You Fall Through
Don't panic. Turn toward where you came from. Kick legs and pull yourself onto ice. Roll away from hole. Get warm immediately - hypothermia sets in fast.
